Oncology Social Services

A cancer diagnosis can be difficult to accept and cope with, especially if you have other life challenges. Our licensed social workers with Premier Health’s Oncology Social Services will assist you and your loved ones through referrals for counseling, financial and legal assistance.

Our team can:

Assess your needs.  We will help you evaluate whether you need assistance with areas such as finance and insurance, family support, emotional status, spiritual needs, or physical problems.

Identify financial resources. If we can help you understand and address financial concerns, this helps you focus on your treatment. Our social workers can help you and your family understand Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance coverage. We can help find ways to fill coverage gaps, such as connecting you to financial assistance through Ohio’s Hospital Assurance Program (HCAP) and a Premier Health program, if you qualify.

Offer supportive care. Our oncology social workers can refer you to appropriate support groups — particularly if you lack a strong support system among family and friends.

Socials workers also provide supportive counseling. However, if you have a mental health issue beyond your cancer diagnosis, such as a history of major depression or marriage issues, our social workers will refer you to a therapist.

Advocate for you. Social workers help you resolve issues that may interfere with getting the care you need. For example, if your employer denies a request for unpaid medical leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act, a social worker may intervene with help from the American Cancer Society and Patient Advocate Foundation.

And oncology social workers help you advocate for your health care wishes. This includes helping you understand and complete  advance health care directives, such as a living will and durable power of attorney.

Refer you to needed services. Oncology social workers use our connections with community service providers to help you and your family access transportation, home-delivered meals, affordable housing, and other necessities. Our social workers also connect you with other health care resources within Premier Health.
