The Protestant Deaconess Society of Dayton is Formed

At its founding, the Protestant Deaconess Society of Dayton provided house-to-house care to serve the rapidly expanding Dayton population.



The Hospital Opens

The original hospital was housed in a private home and had room for 37 beds. Very soon it became clear that the hospital had overgrown the house, so the Society began fundraising for a dedicated hospital building.

Twin Star Children’s Ward Opens



Protestant Deaconess Society of Dayton Changes its Name to Miami Valley Hospital


Opens Dayton’s first emergency room


Becomes the National Center for Fever Therapy Research



Serves as the Regional Treatment Center for All Polio Cases

Miami Valley Hospital served as the primary care facility for polio until the Salk vaccine was instituted in 1955.

Opens the Region’s First Hospital-Based Psychiatric Ward

At this time, fewer than 1% of American general hospitals offered inpatient psychiatric services.


Fundraising Begins City-Wide to Build a "New" MVH

MVH aimed to build a modern, efficient building which allowed for further expansions in the future. The fundraising effort was the largest civic undertaking in Dayton history at this time.



Radioisotope Laboratory Opens, a Forerunner to Nuclear Medicine

MVH was the first non-university hospital in Ohio to be authorized by the Atomic Energy Commission to use radioactive materials in research and patient care.

Cardiac Catheterization Lab is Established

MVH’s First Coronary Care Unit is Established



MVH Performs its First Open Heart Operation

After the establishment of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab in 1957, MVH continued to expand their cardiac technologies. Dr. Kenneth Oberheu performed the first open heart surgery on November 28, 1968.



MVH Performs the First Kidney Transplant in the Region



Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Opens


Federal Government Designates MVH as Regional Treatment Center for Kidney Dialysis


MVH’s NICU Attains Highest Level of Care (Level III) for High-Risk Obstetrical and Newborn Care

Launch of the Region’s First Air Ambulance

The introduction of CareFlight made rapid emergency transport available within a 75-mile radius from the hospital. By its second year, CareFlight was averaging more than one transport every day.

Introduces "Cutting Balloon" Angioplasty to Dayton Area

MVH is one of only five Ohio hospitals chosen to introduce the new cardiac procedure, which serves as an alternative to coronary bypass surgery.

New Shaw Emergency and Trauma Center Opens


MVH Introduces Cutting-Edge Procedures and Devices in Cardiac Care, Neurology, Nephrology, Medical Imaging, and Pharmacy

New technology includes a new 23-suite Surgery Center, PET scanner, successful completion of the first cardiac resynchronization procedure in the Dayton area, laporoscopic kidney retrieval, and “Mikey”, the only hospital-based pharmacy robot in the region.
