Miami Valley Hospital South to Cease Level III Trauma Center Operations

Premier Pulse     May 2024

As part of an ongoing review of our health care operations, and in keeping with our strategic plan’s focus on strategic growth and operational excellence, Premier Health will discontinue Level III Trauma Center operations at Miami Valley Hospital South. The change was effective May 1, 2024.

Premier Health has a long-standing commitment to deliver exceptional emergency and trauma care to our community. This commitment remains. The emergency department will continue round-the-clock operations, with ready access to the region’s only adult Level I trauma program – just nine miles away at Miami Valley Hospital’s main campus – or to the closest appropriate trauma center under EMS protocols. Premier Health also will continue to operate Level III trauma centers at Atrium Medical Center and Upper Valley Medical Center.

While the demand for these services and the proximity of Miami Valley Hospital’s main campus both contributed to this decision, it also reflects the increasing difficulty in sourcing the expertise necessary to staff a Level III trauma center. Our ongoing focus is to ensure the resources we have are allocated strategically across the Premier Health system to ensure the highest quality care for our community’s most critical cases, with seamless access to the most suitable trauma services.

Miami Valley Hospital South cares for, on average, three to four trauma patients each day. Miami Valley Hospital South’s emergency department will continue to uphold a high standard of care for all patients experiencing a range of health conditions. The same trusted physicians and team members will be there for our patients. We are dedicated to ensuring that our community’s most critical cases receive the necessary attention. Likewise, we have been committed to assisting those whose roles are affected by this change in finding other employment opportunities within Premier Health.

The shift in focus for this campus reflects the strong demand we see for strategic growth in health care services in this market. The Miami Valley Hospital South campus continues to see significant growth and investment, particularly in orthopedic and oncology services. We worked with our EMS partners prior to May 1 to ensure a smooth transition of care for our patients.
