Re-verification Marks Ninth Consecutive Three-Year Verification

DAYTON, Ohio (January 12, 2017) – Miami Valley Hospital earned its ninth consecutive verification as a Level I trauma center by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. Miami Valley Hospital, the only Level I trauma center in the region, was first verified in 1992 and has been re-verified every three years since then.

The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma reviews trauma programs every three years in an effort to continuously improve care for injured patients before, during and after hospitalization.

“Miami Valley Hospital is committed to providing optimal care for the injured patient, and the re-verification recognizes that ongoing dedication,” said Mark Shaker, president of Miami Valley Hospital. “Citizens of Montgomery county and the surrounding region can be assured that Miami Valley Hospital is ready and able to care for the most critical patients at all times.”

A Level I trauma center provides the highest level of trauma care available and specializes in the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of all forms of traumatic injury. As a Level I trauma center, Miami Valley Hospital is prepared to manage any type of injury with a full trauma team available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The hospital provides in-house, board-certified trauma surgeons, designated operating rooms, medical imaging, trauma accredited nursing staff, 24/7 blood bank operation and immediately available subspecialists, such as neurosurgeons and orthopedic trauma surgeons.

“The trauma program involves nearly every aspect of service Miami Valley Hospital provides,” said Peter Ekeh, MD, trauma program medical director. “This verification achievement is a team effort; many services come together – emergency medicine, surgery, medical imaging, inpatient units, rehabilitation – to care for the trauma patient.”

Miami Valley Hospital far exceeds the 1,200 trauma patients per year required for a Level I trauma verification, and has treated more than 60,000 critically injured patients since the creation of the trauma department and the initial verification. The hospital has more than 30 years’ experience caring for the region’s most critical patients.
