Premier Health to Host Open House for Media to View Magellan™ Robotic Catheter System, the First of Its Kind in the Midwest

Miami Valley Hospital will demonstrate the new cutting-edge system’s ability to treat patients with peripheral vascular disease.

DAYTON, OH (April 3, 2014) - Premier Health hosted an open house today for the community to view its new Magellan Robotic Catheter System at Miami Valley Hospital. The event took place in the Brethen Center for Surgical Advancement in Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery, which is located on the ground floor of the Berry Women’s Center.

“The Hansen Magellan Robotic System is the first robotic system for endovascular procedures,” said John Matsuura, MD, an endovascular specialist and division director for vascular surgery at The Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine. “By using the robotic arm, we can now steer catheters through complex anatomy to reach and treat a blockage or lesion with therapeutic devices, such as stents, with greater predictability. It’s basically the vehicle that brings the vascular surgeon to the blocked artery.”

Dr. Matsuura called the Magellan a “better and safer” approach than traditional endovascular procedures, which involve pushing a preformed catheter and wire to its target, risking damage to the blood vessel along the way. “It’s revolutionary technology, and it will allow us to reach targets we previously couldn’t reach.”

Made possible by the Robert H. Brethen Foundation, Premier acquired two Magellan systems earlier this year, one to be used clinically for cutting-edge intravascular procedures outside of the heart and brain, and a second that will be housed at the Brethen Center to be used for research and training of medical personnel throughout the Midwest.

Mr. Brethen’s gift establishes Miami Valley Hospital as the first site in the Midwest to acquire the Magellan Robotic System, and only the fourth training facility in the United States with its distinction as a Center of Excellence from California-based Hansen Medical, a global leader in intravascular robotics.

Peripheral vascular disease affects 8-12 million Americans, one in three 70 or older, according to the Vascular Disease Foundation. Health experts call the Magellan robot a platform technology that will expand into a wide variety of therapeutic vascular treatments involving women’s and men’s health and coronary disease.

“It is a pleasure to continue to help Miami Valley Hospital provide enhanced, innovative medical care,” Mr. Brethen said. “I want patients to know that this new form of surgery is available right here in Dayton, Ohio, at Miami Valley Hospital.”
