Diagnosing Spine and Back Pain

As people age, the effects of trauma and normal wear and tear take a toll on the spine. Spine and back pain can result from damage to bones, joints, and discs. Misaligned joints and inflammation of tissues from arthritis also can cause spine and back pain.

Back pain is a complex condition that requires a team of experienced professionals. Premier Health’s spine team has excellent diagnostic skills and provides advanced treatment options. Imaging tests such as bone scans, computed tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and X-rays can help determine the cause of back pain and guide your doctor’s treatment recommendation.

Treating Back Pain

Imaging tests help determine the cause of spine and back pain and guide your doctor in recommending treatment. These tests include bone scans, computed tomography (CT) scans, and X-rays.

Treatment for spine and back pain often starts with the least-invasive methods first. These include:

  • Acupuncture
  • Chiropractic care (non-aggressive cervical spine manipulation)
  • Exercise
  • Injections
  • Medication
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Physical therapy
  • Dry Needling

Our team of specialists works closely to diagnose and treat back pain in its many forms. Whether we recommend physical therapy, medications or surgery, our goal is to get you back to your life as soon as possible. The conditions we treat include:

Premier Health’s experienced physicians offer a variety of surgical procedures to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. Types of back surgery include discectomy, laminectomy, spinal fusion and vertebroplasty.

Our surgeons and neurointerventionalists can use minimally invasive techniques for many of these procedures, making small incisions and using tiny instruments. Minimally invasive surgery can mean a faster recovery for patients.

Spinal Cord Injury Diagnosis and Treatment

Spinal cord injury results in a loss of motor and/or sensory function. A spinal cord injury requires immediate treatment in the field by EMS to avoid long-term damage. Treatment starts with restraining the spine and controlling inflammation to prevent further damage. This can be achieved with bracing or traction.

After the initial injury is surveyed, the multidisciplinary team uses different diagnostic tools to more thoroughly investigate damage to the spine. This can involve X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, angiography or neurological examinations.

Premier Health’s neurosurgeons work in collaboration with CareFlight Air and Mobile Services and the trauma team at Miami Valley Hospital’s Level 1 Trauma Center to provide the best possible treatment options for acute traumatic spine injuries.

In more severe cases, surgery is required to stabilize the spine. Our neurosurgical team works collaboratively to tailor the surgical decompression and stabilization techniques to the type of injury the patient sustained.
