Detection and Prevention

Back pain and spine injuries are complex conditions that require a team approach. The spine team at Premier Health combines a patient-centered philosophy with advanced diagnostic skills.

Your doctor may refer you to our spine team after an initial assessment of your condition or to help you manage pain.

If you experience a spine trauma, our experts at the region’s only Level I Trauma Center at Miami Valley Hospital provide the highest level of emergency care for complex and unusual spine conditions.

Atrium Medical Center’s Level III Trauma Center also manages spine patients. In the most serious spine emergencies, the Atrium trauma team will assess your condition and stabilize the spine. If you need a higher level of care you will be transported to the Level I Trauma Center.

Diagnosing Spine Conditions

To diagnose your spine condition, your doctor will:

  • Talk with you about your symptoms
  • Discuss your medical history
  • Perform a physical exam

Advanced medical imaging tests can help determine the cause of back pain and guide your doctor’s treatment recommendations. Types of imaging tests your doctor may use include:

A traumatic spinal cord injury requires immediate emergency medical care to avoid long-term damage. Your EMS team will:

  • Evaluate your injury on site
  • Stabilize the spine to control inflammation and prevent further damage
  • Coordinate with CareFlight Air and Mobile Services to transfer you to Miami Valley Hospital’s Level I Trauma Center or another appropriate care facility

When you arrive at our trauma center, doctors will thoroughly investigate damage to the neck and spine using:

  • Imaging tests/angiography tests
