Brooke's Story

Return To the Basketball Court

Brooke Bergman remembers one day being at the intersection of Ohio 121 and Conover Road, driving home from Versailles High School, where she is a senior and athlete. What happened after that, when her car and a semitruck collided, she doesn’t remember.

Versailles Fire and EMS responded quickly, caring for her until CareFlight arrived to continue her care and fly her to Miami Valley Hospital’s Level I Trauma Center.

Unresponsive, and her breathing compromised, Brooke was intubated and put on a ventilator. The CareFlight team also put her in a pelvic binder to stabilize her injuries. An x-ray revealed she had significant pelvic fractures.

A head-to-pelvis CT scan detected additional injuries: traumatic brain injury, rib fractures, and collapsed left lung. She also had a broken femur. An MRI found that the blunt trauma of the collision tore some of the nerve fibers in her brain, an injury that can lead to long-lasting problems with brain functioning.

Amazingly, Brooke recovered after spending 19 days at Miami Valley Hospital, plus followed by inpatient rehab, which included physical, occupational, speech, and music therapy (singing helped her regain her voice).

Less than 10 weeks after the accident, Brooke returned to school. Gwen Bergman, Brooke’s mother, had this to say about her daughter’s care: “To everyone who laid hands on Brooke, I would just like to say thank you for treating Brooke like one of your own kids. Brooke’s going to be on the basketball court this winter, and nobody thought that was going to be possible, so thank you.”
