CareFlight Ground Transportation

In addition to air medical services, CareFlight operates four Mobile Intensive Care Units (MICUs) to deliver advanced critical care by ground.

CareFlight MICUs function as fully equipped mobile intensive care units, bringing hospital‑level care directly to the patient - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

CareFlight Ground Transportation works seamlessly with CareFlight Air Services, communications, and regional referral systems to ensure the right mode of transport is used for every patient, based on medical need, distance, weather, and urgency.

Mobile Intensive Care Unit Capabilities

CareFlight MICUs:

• Are staffed by a highly trained clinical team, including:
  • A certified flight nurse or critical care transport nurse
  • A critical care paramedic
  • An emergency medical technician (EMT) driver
• Operate as fully equipped intensive care environments, capable of managing complex and time‑sensitive conditions
• Serve a 75‑mile radius from Miami Valley Hospital
• Carry two units of whole blood for use during hospital‑to‑hospital and scene responses

Advanced Ground Critical Care Transport

CareFlight MICUs provide rapid transportation for patients requiring specialized care, including:

• Scene responses from motor vehicle crashes and other emergencies
• Interfacility transfers from community hospitals
• Transport to Miami Valley Hospital’s Level 1 Trauma Center and other specialty care destinations

Each MICU is equipped with advanced monitoring, life‑support technology, medication delivery systems, and secure communications. This allows our team to deliver continuous,critical care throughout transport.

• Atrium Medical Center
• Miami Valley Hospital South
• Miami Valley Hospital North
• Upper Valley Medical Center

This allows CareFlight to efficiently support both urban and rural communities across the region.
