Aneurysm and Other Vascular Conditions

The Premier Health Clinical Neuroscience Institute offers advanced comprehensive care for patients with blood vessel diseases in the brain, neck and spine, such as aneurysms, acute ischemic stroke, arteriovenous malformations (AVM) and other cerebrovascular disorders.

Other conditions include:

  • Cerebral vascular narrowing
  • Uncontrolled epistaxis
  • Hemorrhage in the brain and spine, including intracerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage
  • Carotid artery disease (narrowing and other conditions)
  • Narrowing in arteries in the brain leading to stroke symptoms
  • Other vascular anomalies in the brain and spine
  • Brain tumors with increased vascularity

The Premier Health Clinical Neuroscience Institute neurointerventional surgery team brings important neurointerventional experience to the region, including experience in delicate procedures such as the latest in embolization of brain aneurysms— all with the goal of improving recovery and minimizing complications for patients.

Procedures offered include:

  • Catheter diagnostic angiography to evaluate vascular disorders of the brain and spine
  • Carotid artery stenting, and endovascular revascularization of head and neck vessels
  • Acute ischemic stroke rescue therapy
  • Intracranial artery stenting
  • Embolization of brain aneurysms
  • Flow diversion for brain aneurysms
  • Embolization of vascular malformations of the brain and spine
  • Embolization of tumors of the brain and spine
  • Treatment of cerebral vasospasm in subarachnoid hemorrhage
  • Treatment of uncontrolled epistaxis (nose bleeding) with endovascular embolization
  • WADA testing (as part of a comprehensive evaluation of epilepsy patients)

Our neurosciences team of specialists include board-certified and experienced neurosurgeons, neurologists, neurointerventional surgeons, vascular neurologists, neurocritical care physicians and neuropsychologists who collaborate to provide care and treatment options with the goal of improving quality of life. We combine a patient-centered approach with advanced technology, research and unparalleled expertise to deliver the best possible outcomes. Premier Health provides convenient access to the region’s top neuroscientists at multiple locations throughout Southwest Ohio.

Diagnosing Cerebrovascular Conditions

Cerebrovascular conditions are diseases that affect the blood flow to the brain. Atherosclerosis, for example, occurs when an artery or arteries become partially blocked by accumulated matter, called plaque. This can lower blood flow to the brain and result in a stroke. Blood clots that could form in other locations (such as in the heart) could also migrate to the brain and result in a stroke.

Premier Health specialists rely on a variety of tests to diagnose conditions of the brain’s blood vessels, including magnetic resonance imaging and angiography (MRI/A) and computed tomography angiography (CTA) scans, catheter based angiography with 3D imaging, ultrasonography, PET/CT scans, and brain perfusion scans.

Advances in Neurointervention

The neurointerventional team at Miami Valley Hospital knows how crucial it is to treat stroke and aneurysm victims rapidly with the most advanced tools. Recently, this group became the first in the area to acquire two new technologies to help patients stricken with these diseases. Learn more.

Treating Cerebrovascular Conditions

With stroke, time is brain. When blood flow to the brain is restricted by a clot that has blocked a major brain artery – our neurointerventional surgeons and award-winning comprehensive Stroke Team are both ready with lifesaving medical and surgical procedures 24/7/365.

Our specialists in endovascular stroke rescue procedures and neurosurgery also offer advanced treatments for bleeding – or potential bleeding in the brain. These include coil embolization and aneurysm clipping for brain aneurysms; a pipeline embolization device for intracranial aneurysm repair – control of intracranial pressure, stereotactic radiosurgery, an endovascular embolization for arteriovenous malformations (AVM).
