Occupational Therapy

When an illness, injury, or surgery makes it difficult for you go about your normal routine, occupational therapy can help. This therapy helps you to regain the movement and skills you had prior to your illness, injury, or surgery so that you can return to your everyday life. Fidelity Health Care’s licensed occupational therapy professionals can come to your home to help you recover.

How Can Occupational Therapy Help You?

Occupational therapy can help you regain skills like:

  • Bathing or dressing
  • Reaching for items, or bending over to pick something up
  • Getting in and out of bed, a chair, or the car
  • Making decisions
  • Cooking, eating, and cleaning up after yourself
  • Walking or taking steps
  • Regaining the skills to use the phone, television, or computer
  • Transferring from the shower, toilet, bed, or other furniture

Your occupational therapist will come to your home. During your first meeting, you will get to know each other and identify the skills you wish to regain. Your therapist will consider any challenges you may have with memory and reasoning, as well as any emotional difficulties that could be limiting your recovery.

Your therapist will look for any barriers in your home or work environment that might be in your way, and will recommend modifications that may be preventing you from regaining your independence. Together you’ll put together a plan that is right for you.

Your therapist may also work with your family members who can help you achieve your goals. You may need assistance devices like a cane or a grabber (for out-of-reach items). Or you may have furniture or other items in the way that are preventing your mobility. Your safety is our priority as you regain your physical and emotional strength.

If you need help relearning some activities, your therapist can coach you on the steps it will take.

  • Have decreases in endurance and shortness of breath when active
