Screening Mammography

Mammography remains the only approved screening procedure for detecting breast cancer.

Screening mammograms are for women who have no breast problems or complaints. No physician order is required for women age 40 and over. When to begin regular mammograms is a personal decision between you and your physician. If you have a strong family history of breast cancer, check with your physician about being screened at an earlier age.

Results for screening mammograms are completed within one to three days. In most cases, you should receive a letter from your physician within seven to 10 days.

Genius™ 3-D Mammography™

Premier Health was the first health system in Dayton to offer 3-D mammography (also called tomosynthesis), which studies show can find more invasive cancers and may reduce callbacks for additional images. Using our Genius™ 3-D Mammography™, radiologists can get a clearer image of breast tissue, giving them a better opportunity to detect breast cancer at its earliest stage.

All our breast centers offer the option of either traditional two-dimensional screening mammography or Genius™ 3-D Mammography™.

For more information about 3-D mammography, please read our frequently asked questions.

Diagnostic Mammography

Premier Health offers diagnostic mammography at all hospital-based locations. A diagnostic mammogram is problem-focused, examining abnormalities or questionable areas identified in a screening mammogram or clinical breast exam. It’s for women who:

  • Have an existing breast issue
  • Need additional images to clarify previous results
  • Need follow-up breast care

Our onsite radiologists quickly interpret your diagnostic mammogram results, and we discuss them with you before you leave.

You’ll need an order from your physician to schedule a diagnostic mammogram. While covered by most health insurance companies, it’s best to call your insurance company to confirm coverage prior to scheduling.

Mobile Mammography

Let us come to you! Our mobile mammography coach (owned and operated by Atrium Medical Center) can make getting your screening mammogram a little easier with convenient locations close to work or home throughout Southwest Ohio. The mammography equipment in the mobile coach is the same as what you would find in a Premier Health breast center, including Genius™ 3-D MAMMOGRAPHY™.

Screening mammograms on the coach do not require a physician’s order for women age 40 and over. However, appointments are required.
