Breast Imaging Services

Experience and Advanced Imaging

Our Miami Valley Hospital and Miami Valley Hospital North breast centers each have been named an American College of Radiology (ACR). Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, achieving ACR accreditation in areas beyond the mandatory mammography accreditation. This includes stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound, and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. They’re also certified participants in the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers.

In addition, our High Risk Breast Cancer Program provides special testing and monitoring for women at high risk of developing breast cancer because of family or personal history.

When you rely on Premier Health for your breast imaging needs, you’ll benefit from:

  • A supportive and comforting environment, including heated spa robes, focused on personalized attention and care
  • An experienced staff that performs about 50,000 mammograms each year
  • Technology that helps increase accuracy in diagnosing early-stage breast cancers
  • Board-certified radiologists, specially-trained in mammography, who collaborate with other physicians during a weekly breast cancer care conference
  • Licensed mammography technologists, focused on your comfort, who are certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists

Screening Mammography

Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer in women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Successful treatment depends on early detection. Mammography remains the only approved screening procedure for detecting breast cancer.

Screening mammograms are for women who have no breast problems or complaints. No physician order is required for women age 40 and over. When to begin regular mammograms is a personal decision between you and your physician. If you have a strong family history of breast cancer, check with your physician about being screened at an earlier age.

Results for screening mammograms are completed within one to three days. In most cases, you should receive a letter from your physician within seven to 10 days.

Genius™ 3-D Mammography™

Premier Health was the first health system in Dayton to offer 3-D mammography (also called tomosynthesis), which studies show can find more invasive cancers and may reduce callbacks for additional images. Using our Genius™ 3-D Mammography™, radiologists can get a clearer image of breast tissue, giving them a better opportunity to detect breast cancer at its earliest stage.

Nearly all our breast centers offer the option of either traditional two-dimensional screening mammography or Genius™ 3-D Mammography™.

For more information about 3-D mammography, please read our frequently asked questions.

Diagnostic Mammography

Premier Health offers diagnostic mammography at all hospital-based locations. A diagnostic mammogram is problem-focused, examining abnormalities or questionable areas identified in a screening mammogram or clinical breast exam. It’s for women who:

  • Have an existing breast issue
  • Need additional images to clarify previous results
  • Need follow-up breast care

Our onsite radiologists quickly interpret your diagnostic mammogram results, and we discuss them with you before you leave.

You’ll need an order from your physician to schedule a diagnostic mammogram. While covered by most health insurance companies, it’s best to call your insurance company to confirm coverage prior to scheduling.

Mobile Mammography

Let us come to you! Our mobile mammography coach (owned and operated by Atrium Medical Center) can make getting your screening mammogram a little easier with convenient locations close to work or home throughout Southwest Ohio. The mammography equipment in the mobile coach is the same as what you would find in a Premier Health breast center, including Genius™ 3-D MAMMOGRAPHY™.

Screening mammograms on the coach do not require a physician’s order for women age 40 and over. However, appointments are required.

Breast Ultrasound

Premier Health offers breast ultrasound to follow up on a known breast issue. We use breast ultrasound to distinguish between solid tumors and fluid-filled cysts and to evaluate lumps that are hard to see on a mammogram.

Ultrasound isn’t used for routine breast cancer screenings without a mammogram because it doesn’t consistently detect certain early signs of cancer.

Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound

Premier Health was the first health system in Dayton to offer automated whole breast ultrasound (AWBUS), a newer option for women with dense breast tissue. We offer AWBUS at select Premier Health locations.

This supplementary ultrasound examines both breasts for women with an inconclusive mammogram. It’s not a replacement for screening mammography.

Whole breast coverage means all your breast tissue is examined for review by a radiologist. This includes:

  • Lower lymph nodes under your arm
  • Inner breast tissue between your breasts
  • Outer breast tissue under and around your breasts
  • Tissue under the collar bone

Ultrasound detects cancers, such as fast-growing invasive cancers, that can’t be seen well by mammography.

A physician order is required for this exam. Insurance coverage varies. It’s best to call your insurance company to confirm coverage prior to scheduling.

Breast MRI

Breast MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)can provide valuable information about a breast condition that can’t be obtained using mammography or ultrasound. As with breast ultrasound, MRI is a supplement to mammography and not a replacement for it.

Breast MRI provides:

  • Assessment of abnormal areas seen on a mammogram
  • Evaluation of extremely dense breast tissue
  • Detection and characterization of breast disease
  • Assessment of disease extent
  • Guidance for biopsy and localization
  • Evaluation of treatment response
  • Evaluation of breast implants for leaks or ruptures

It’s also sometimes used in screening certain groups of women, such as young women at high risk for breast cancer.

Breast Biopsy

Breast biopsy is a procedure in which part or all of a suspicious breast growth is removed, using a needle or similar device, and examined. Premier Health offers a variety of breast biopsy options to evaluate suspicious breast tissue. These options include image-guided biopsy – using ultrasound, MRI, or stereotactic guidance – or open surgical biopsy.

In both cases, the tissue obtained is sent to the pathology lab for analysis with results available to your physician usually within 72 hours.

An open surgical biopsy is usually done as a same-day procedure in an operating room. The tissue of the area in question, as well as some adjacent tissue, is surgically removed.

Send a Mammogram Reminder

Show friends and family you care about their health. Send them a reminder to schedule a mammogram.

A mammogram is the best means for early detection of breast cancer. Yet many women still don’t schedule their annual mammogram. A reminder from you can make all the difference.
