Wes Halderman, MD, Joins Jamestown Family Medicine
Darke County native excited to return to Ohio and serve rural communities
JAMESTOWN, Ohio (September 1, 2014) – Wes Halderman, MD, will return to his Midwestern roots and put his love for serving those in rural communities into practice when he joins Jamestown Family Medicine in August.
Dr. Halderman received his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and most recently finished his residency in family medicine at Self Regional Hospital in Greenwood, S.C. He grew up on a farm in Southwest Ohio and graduated from Franklin Monroe High School.
“It has always been our intention to return to Ohio,” Dr. Halderman said referring to himself, his wife Abby and their 11-month-old daughter. “I left Ohio to do my residency because the program in South Carolina was so highly recommended. One of the things that appealed to me about the residency program is that the hospital only had family medicine residents. As a result, I gained a lot of experience in intensive care, emergency services, pediatrics, and labor and delivery, in addition to the outpatient setting.”
Dr. Halderman is eager to bring that varied experience to his patients in Jamestown where he hopes to play a vital role in preventive care.
“I am passionate about helping people – whole families – even when they are young, so that we can establish healthy habits and routines that will help prevent the development of chronic diseases,” he said.
Dr. Halderman originally entered college with plans to pursue a degree in engineering. However, he soon realized that his desire to help communities and solve problems did not include the personal relationships he desired. He switched to a pre-med route when a side job at Upper Valley Medical Center’s emergency department – where he helped hand out blankets and talk to patients – confirmed medicine was the right fit.
“I felt like I could do a lot of good in the engineering world and solve some problems, but I realized I was looking for that personal interaction,” Dr. Halderman said.
Eventually, Dr. Halderman also hopes to participate in international medical mission when his schedule allows. He and his wife were able to travel to Peru for two weeks as part of his residency. There, he helped play a role in preventive care education.
“Educating others on simple things such as clean water, proper hygiene, prenatal care, and childhood immunizations is a big part of improving world health,” he said.
