Premier Health Introduces Cutting-Edge Sound Wave Therapy for Liver Tumors

DAYTON, Ohio (October 20, 2025) – Premier Health is one of the first health systems in Ohio to offer a new, noninvasive option for patients with liver tumors using the Edison® Histotripsy System. This advanced technology provides physicians with a way to target and break down liver tumors using focused sound waves, offering a new alternative to traditional treatment approaches.

Histotripsy is an image-guided procedure that uses computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound to deliver highly focused sound waves directly to a tumor. These sound waves create tiny bubbles within the targeted tissue, which rapidly expand and collapse to mechanically disrupt the tumor while minimizing effects on nearby healthy tissue.

At Premier Health, the histotripsy procedure is performed by Shannon Kauffman, MD, an interventional radiologist with Radiology Physicians Inc., and James R. Ouellette, DO, surgical oncologist at Premier Health. Together, they bring multidisciplinary expertise to patients through the Liver Cancer Center of Ohio.

“Being able to offer histotripsy gives us an important new way to treat certain liver tumors without surgery or radiation,” said Dr. Ouellette. “It provides another option for patients who may not be eligible for traditional treatments, and in most cases, they can go home the same day.”

“Histotripsy uses focused sound energy to break down targeted liver tissue precisely where the tumor exists. Because the treatment is noninvasive, patients typically experience a shorter recovery time and less discomfort compared to other approaches,” said Dr. Kauffman.

The Edison® Histotripsy System is FDA-approved and is the first technology of its kind to use focused sound energy to mechanically disrupt unwanted tissue. Unlike other tumor treatments that rely on heat, ionizing radiation, or incisions, histotripsy is noninvasive and typically performed as an outpatient procedure.
