New president named at Atrium Medical Center

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (January 9, 2017) - The new year begins with a new president at Atrium Medical Center. Effective January 1, Michael Uhl has been named president of the Middletown hospital serving Butler and Warren counties and surrounding areas.

As president, Uhl oversees patient care for area residents and visitors who choose Atrium’s services, as well as the strategic decisions of the city’s second largest employer.

Atrium Medical Center operates in Middletown the only full-service hospital and trauma center located in Warren County, as well as a 24/7 emergency center in Mason. The hospital has more than 1,500 full-time, part-time and on-call employees. 

“Mike’s clinical and administrative background and recent leadership roles within Premier Health make him a strong choice to lead Atrium,” said Mary Boosalis, president and chief executive officer of Premier Health. “We’re pleased that he will advance our organization’s mission in Butler and Warren counties to improve the health of the communities we serve.” 

Atrium’s new president succeeds Carol Turner, who recently retired.

Uhl now leads the same organization where he began his nursing career. 

“I am very honored and humbled to have this opportunity to head our great team of physicians and health professionals here at Atrium Medical Center as we continue to excel in the care and services we provide to the region,” Uhl said.

Since the beginning of 2016, Uhl has served as chief operating officer of Atrium. Before that, he was system vice president of operations innovation for Atrium’s parent system, Premier Health. In that role, which he held from 2014 to the beginning of this year, he helped the nonprofit health system achieve millions in savings while at the same time improve its quality and performance scores.

Uhl’s past experience also includes nearly 10 years at Deloitte Consulting LLP advising health care clients on operational and financial process improvements. 

While pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing at University of Cincinnati, Uhl worked part-time as a paramedic and firefighter. Upon graduation, he began his nursing career in Middletown and would become the nurse manager of the emergency department. 

Additionally, he has earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Phoenix and a Master of Science in Nursing Administration from Xavier University. 

This leadership announcement comes during Atrium Medical Center’s 100th anniversary in 2017. While the celebrations will reflect on the hospital’s history in the community, Atrium is also offering new services. 

“I see this as an exciting time to help lead the hospital as we celebrate our 100-year history, so we can continue to invest in services to ensure our region has access to nationally-recognized health care close to home for years to come,” Uhl said.

In December, Atrium started its new Natural Beginnings Birth Center, the first comprehensive natural birth center in the greater Cincinnati area to be located within an acute care hospital. In spring 2017, renovations will be completed to add a geriatric unit to offer senior-friendly emergency care within the existing emergency department. In addition, Atrium and Premier Health are now part of the MD Anderson Cancer Network ®, a program of MD Anderson Cancer Center. The affiliation provides Premier Health physicians with access to MD Anderson’s world-renowned expertise, offering patients and their families enhanced cancer care close to home.

Atrium Medical Center is located conveniently along the Interstate 75 corridor at exit 32, One Medical Center Drive in Middletown, between Cincinnati and Dayton.
