Diagnosing Neuromuscular Disorders

Your doctor may ask about your symptoms, medical history, physical activity, and perform a physical examination to diagnose a neuromuscular disorder. A physician may order certain tests or observe the way the patient walks, moves, stands, or performs certain physical tasks in order to identify signs of a muscular disorders.

Diagnostic tests may include:

  • Blood screens
  • Electromyography (EMG) – detects electrical activity in muscles
  • Examination of cerebrospinal fluid
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) – takes detailed images of the brain and spinal cord
  • Muscle and nerve biopsies
  • Nerve conduction study – measures electrical activity in nerves
