Multiple Sclerosis Center

The Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Center, part of the Wright State University and Premier health’s Neuroscience Institute, provides advanced diagnosis and management for patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune, demyelinating disease affecting the central nervous system. It occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the myelin sheath that surrounds nerve cells, interrupting signals to the brain and causing symptoms. There is no known cause or cure for MS, but it is neither contagious nor fatal.

Our neurosciences team of specialists include board-certified and experienced neurosurgeons, neurologists, interventional neurologists, and neurocritical care neurologists who collaborate to provide care and  treatment options with the goal of improving quality of life. We combine a patient-centered approach with advanced technology, research and unparalleled expertise to deliver the best possible outcomes.

Premier Health provides convenient access to the region’s top neurologists at multiple locations throughout Southwest Ohio.

Diagnosing Multiple Sclerosis

At its onset, MS produces symptoms that can sometimes be so mild that the patient hardly notices them, or the symptoms subside and the patient doesn’t recognize that anything is wrong. With some types of MS, symptoms can be present and then subside, only to return later. Some symptoms of MS include:

  • Blurry vision or vision loss
  • Dizziness
  • Numbness or weakness
  • Pain or tingling
  • Tremors
  • Unsteady walking

Diagnosis of multiple sclerosis may involve a physical examination, a review of the patient’s medical history, and certain tests like blood screens, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), spinal taps, or evoked potentials

No one test or examination can confirm MS; a diagnosis is typically made after several tests are conducted and compared, combined with the patient’s medical history and symptoms.

Treating Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) care and treatment is complex. At the Multiple Sclerosis Center, we bring together a wide range of treatment methods to help our patients manage their condition and lead full lives.

At the Multiple Sclerosis Center, we employ the use of medications and lifestyle modifications that may alleviate symptoms and slow the progression of the disease:

  • Appropriate nutrition plans
  • Emotional support and education through patient support groups and forums
  • Occupational, physical, and vocational therapy

We strive to treat the whole patient, support their physical wellness, their emotional health, and maintain the quality of their lives.
