Magnet Recognition for Nursing Excellence

Magnet logoThe American Nurses Credentialing Center’sOff Site Icon (ANCC) Magnet Recognition®Off Site Icon is not a prize or award. It is a credential of organizational recognition for nursing excellence and the highest honor a hospital can receive in the field of professional nursing from the American Nurses AssociationOff Site Icon (ANA). Magnet designation recognizes when a hospital’s nursing staff meets the ANCC’s high standards for patient care, nursing excellence, and innovations in professional nursing practice. Hospitals that achieve this recognition must provide an environment that empowers nurses, values their contributions, and supports nursing leadership. According to the ANA, Magnet hospitals consistently deliver better patient outcomes than non-Magnet hospitals.

Only 6.9 percent of all registered hospitals in the United States have achieved Magnet Recognition. Currently, Miami Valley is one of only 25 hospitals in Ohio, and one of 400 hospitals worldwide to have earned this distinction.

Beacon Award for Excellence

Beacon logoThe American Association of Critical-Care NursesOff Site Icon (AACN) created the Beacon Award for Excellence™Off Site Icon to recognize individual nursing units that distinguish themselves by improving every facet of patient care. Units that achieve this three-year, three-level award with a gold, silver, or bronze designation meet national criteria consistent with Magnet recognition, the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and the National Quality Healthcare Award.

In 2011, Miami Valley's Heart and Vascular Intensive Care was the first critical care unit in Dayton to receive this distinction. In 2014, MVH earned the Silver Award.
