Mike's Story: A Timely Favor Leads to Timely Stroke Care
In 30 years as a photojournalist, Mike Ullery built strong bonds with first responders in the Miami Valley region. This included flying with CareFlight to documenting the work of CareFlight staff.
One morning, he set out for the Piqua Fire Department, which asked him to check one of their cameras that got wet on a fire call. On the way, he began feeling weak, with a tingly sensation, which spread to his face and down his leg. As he neared the fire department, he called Piqua Fire Chief Lee Adams, who had called about the camera and was just leaving the fire station.
Adams recalls that Mike “didn’t make any sense” on the phone. Finding Mike in his car in the parking lot, he called medics to the car. They identified he was having a stroke, and an ambulance took Mike to Upper Valley Medical Center (UVMC).
Bryan R. Ludwig, MD, a neurointerventionist with Premier Health, said that the emergency stroke team assessed Mike and turned his care over to UVMC’s inpatient NEUROne team of physicians and advanced practice nurses, who treated him.
At his first follow-up visit in the outpatient stroke clinic, his symptoms were about 50 percent improved, and he had returned to work and was able to drive again. About three months later, he was doing even better, his symptoms nearly completely resolved.
