Diagnosing Headache and Migraine

Evaluating your symptoms is essential for a doctor to diagnoses your migraine or headache. This may include a review of your family and medical history, or a physical examination. Pinpointing the diagnosis may depend on assessing the intensity of the pain, its frequency, and what other symptoms coincide with the condition.

There are two types of headaches, primary and secondary. Primary headaches are conditions that exist on their own, outside any other illness. Secondary headaches are those that are symptoms of another health condition, such as trauma or disease.

A migraine is a moderate-to-severe headache that carries other symptoms like nausea, impaired vision, or sensitivity to light. A migraine can last up to 72 hours and can be triggered by such things as anxiety, exposure to light, lack of food or sleep, and stress.

If you have symptoms or a family history of migraines, your doctor may diagnose migraines based on your medical history and a physical examination. Your doctor may also order more tests such as a blood test, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), or a spinal tap.
