Breastfeeding Support

As a new mom, you may have many questions about breastfeeding. Premier Health is dedicated to helping you and your baby thrive. From classes to one-on-one breastfeeding and pumping consultations, we are here to support you and your baby on your breastfeeding journey.

Premier Health is the first health system in Ohio whose maternity centers have completed all steps of a statewide breastfeeding initiative aimed at reducing the state's high infant mortality rate.

Miami Valley Hospital, Miami Valley Hospital South, and Upper Valley Medical Center as well as Atrium Medical are recognized as Five Star Hospitals, for taking steps to promote, protect and support breastfeeding by The Ohio Department of Health and Ohio Hospital Association. Premier Health has International Board Certified Lactation Consultants on staff; all of whom are registered nurses.

Why is breastfeeding important?

Research has shown that breastfeeding provides many benefits for both mom and baby.

Benefits to the baby:

  • Breast milk provides antibodies to fight off viruses and bacteria.
  • Breast milk provides a mix of vitamins, protein and fat to promote your baby’s growth and development.
  • Studies show breastfed babies are less likely to be obese when they’re older.
  • Research suggests that breastfeeding lowers the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), Type 2 diabetes, childhood leukemia, asthma, allergies and many other diseases and conditions.

Benefits to the mother:

  • Breastfeeding can help facilitate post-partum weight loss, as you use extra calories to feed the baby.
  • Studies show breastfeeding can reduce the risk of pre- and post-menopausal breast cancer.
  • Breastfeeding can help lower ovarian cancer risks by preventing ovulation.
  • Breastfeeding promotes bonding between mom and baby.
  • Breastfeeding can save mom both time and money.

What resources do we offer?

Time with your infant in their first weeks and months is special and should be stress free. Premier Health has the resources to help you should problems with breastfeeding occur.

  • Outpatient clinics and consultations are available upon request.
  • Our International Board Certified Lactation Consultants give you one-on-one instruction and support while you’re in the birthing center as well as after your leave the hospital.
  • Equipment such as breast pump with a prescription from a physician and other supplies are available through Fidelity Health Care at (937) 208-6400(937) 208-6400 .

When should I call for help?

Breastfeeding is a natural process, but problems can occur. The first days of breastfeeding can be very rewarding and filled with questions as you and your baby learn to breastfeed together. Do not hesitate to call us for help if:

  • Your baby is not feeding well
  • Your breasts are engorged and painful
  • Your nipples are extremely sore, cracked, bleeding, or blistered
  • Your infant only sucks briefly or very softly and is not nursing well
  • Your baby has fewer than six wet diapers or less than four stools a day after your milk volume has increased
  • If your baby’s stools are NOT yellow by day five
  • Your baby is unhappy, weak, tired or not interested in nursing
  • Your baby nurses less than eight times in 24 hours and/or appears to sleep most of the day
  • You do not hear swallowing while your baby is nursing
