The Dietetic Internship Program

The Dietetic Internship Program and Miami Valley Hospital history dates back to 1928, when the first graduates completed the program.

Program Description

The MVH Dietetic Internship accepts eight interns annually. The program is a challenging 43 week internship, beginning in mid-August 2018 and ending in mid June 2019. The program is currently granted accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).

ACEND is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are eligible to apply for active membership in the Academy and to write the registration examination for dietitians. MVH offers a program that prepares interns for entry-level positions as Registered Dietitian Nutrionists. Only a full-time internship option is available.

The MVH dietetic internship program is divided into two segments. Part I provides dietetic experiences in food service management, clinical, and outpatient/wellness areas. Part II provides advanced level experiences in staff responsibility.

The concentration area for Miami Valley Hospital is Nutrition Services in the Acute Care Setting – Clinical and Food Service.

Program Goals and Objectives

Goal 1: The MVH Dietetic Internship program will prepare graduates to become professional, competent, entry-level registered dietitians.

Outcome Measures

  • Over a 5-year period, at least 80% of graduates will pass the registration exam for dietitians on their first attempt.
  • Over a 5-year period, 90% of interns will complete all program requirements within 150% of the planned completion time or 17 months.
  • Of those graduates pursuing employment in the field of dietetics, at least 75% will find  a position within 12 months of graduation ( 5 year average).
  • When surveyed, 16-17 months following program completion, graduates rate preparation for a position in dietetics with an average score of 3.5 or higher on a 5 point scale (5-year average).
  • When surveyed, 16-17 months following program completion, employers rate the preparation of graduates for a position in dietetics with an average score of 3.5 or higher on a 5 point scale (5-year average).

Goal 2: The program will offer interns a variety of experiences to prepare graduates for the diverse opportunities in the field of dietetics.

Outcome Measures:

  • Interns at graduation will rate the variety of rotations and experiences in the program with an average score of 3.5 or higher on a 5 point scale (5-year average).
  • When surveyed, 16-17 months following program completion, 85% of graduates will agree that the variety of experiences prepared them to work in their chosen field (5-year average).

Registration Exam Pass Rate 

The current pass rate for first time takers for MVH graduates on the Registration Exam for Dietitians is 95%.
