Virginia’s pregnancy was uncomplicated and progressing well. It was during a routine appointment they learned Emma had died. One of the first things her doctor at the time wanted Virginia and Gustavo to do was find a support group. They found the HEAL program at Atrium Medical Center, founded and led by Sheree Young.

Virginia’s concern was keeping the memory of Emma alive — making sure her short life mattered. Sheree Young explains that for parents who have experienced a loss, a subsequent pregnancy and birth can be particularly difficult. “Every morning parents who have had a child die wake up and say, ‘Is something going to happen to this baby today?’.”

Casey Boyce, MD, was Virginia’s new physician for her second pregnancy. Dr. Boyce was very sensitive to the situation and understood the high anxiety around this next pregnancy for the Gimenez’s. Virginia remembers how Dr. Boyce went out of her way to make her comfortable. “I really liked her because she asked about Emma. She wanted to know about her and what happened.”

Virginia appreciated the extra care Dr. Boyce offered during her pregnancy. “She took extra steps such as giving me her personal cell phone number. Doctors don’t do that; that’s amazing.”

Calling it one of her most memorable deliveries, Dr. Boyce relished welcoming Emma’s new little sister Isabella to the world. She is a healthy baby girl whose parents welcomed her with tears of joy and much relief.
