Flags at UVMC Honor Veterans

TROY, Ohio (Nov. 5, 2018) -- The driveways at Upper Valley Medical Center (UVMC) are lined with red, white and blue to honor veterans and those currently serving in the military.

Nearly 600 American flags are on display as part of the hospital’s observance of Veterans Day.

The veterans’ flags project gave hospital employees, volunteers and medical staff an opportunity to sponsor a flag in honor of a veteran or loved one currently serving in the military.  For a minimal fee, flag sponsors’ honorees will be recognized on monitors in the hospital cafeteria the week of Veterans Day.

Proceeds from the project, organized by the UVMC Future Leaders group, will be donated to Honor Flight and Hospice’s American Pride program for veterans.

In conjunction with the flags project, a community Veterans Day program will be hosted Nov. 12 at 12:30 p.m. in the UVMC Lower Level Conference Rooms A-D.

Guest speaker Al Mulder, local U.S. Army veteran, will share the story of his family’s experience as part of the Dutch Resistance as citizens of the Netherlands during World War II. The Mulder family hid a Jewish family in their home for the last six months of the war. They later immigrated to America, and Mulder became a U.S. citizen in 1962. He joined the military and served in the Army’s First Armored Division during the Vietnam era.

Following Mulder’s presentation, a special recognition will be held for veterans and active service members. A Veterans Day Celebration Tea will follow with light refreshments in the UVMC Cafeteria.

The events are open to all veterans and the community. RSVPs are requested to 440-4515.
