Low Acuity Traumatic Brain Injury Care Expands at UVMC
By Ashlee Gulker MSN, RN, CV-BC, director of nursing, UVMC
Beginning in April, Upper Valley Medical Center (UVMC) will begin admitting low acuity traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients as part of Premier Health’s continued commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care.
Developed through collaboration among the Premier Health Neurosciences Institute, Premier Physician Network (PPN), Critical Care Pulmonary Medicine, Miami Valley Emergency Specialists, and the UVMC Trauma Team, this new protocol enhances coordinated care across disciplines while expanding access to neurological services in the northern market.
Emergency department providers will determine patient eligibility using defined clinical criteria. Eligible patients will be admitted by the trauma surgeon to the UVMC Intensive Care Unit, with Critical Care providers consulting to support patient management.
Following discharge, patients will be scheduled for follow-up within 72 hours at the Premier Health Neuro Clinic – Vandalia, ensuring continuity of care close to home.
UVMC will serve as the pilot site for this model, with plans for potential expansion across Premier Health as part of the One Premier initiative.
