What treatment options are available for those who suffer with peripheral arterial disease (PAD)?

Patients with peripheral arterial disease have multiple treatment options available to them. The first thing we try to do is prevent disease progression and prevent poorly healing wounds. That is done by working with them to stop smoking, taking medications to lower their cholesterol and prevent clotting. The next step is walking if possible. If the patients can be managed with walking then no other intervention is necessary. But if they get to the point where they cannot be treated further, that the symptoms are limiting or they develop critical ischemia, or poorly healing wounds, then interventions such as angioplasty or bypass are available.
