Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery

To help patients get back to their lives more quickly, Premier Physician Network gynecologic surgeons perform minimally invasive surgical procedures including hysterectomy, removal of uterine fibroids, repair of fallen pelvic organs (prolapse) and more. Many procedures are done in the office or as an outpatient (no hospital stay).

Minimally invasive surgery uses only a few small incisions (cuts) for procedures that were previously done with larger open incisions. Benefits for patients can include less pain, less blood loss, less risk of infection, shorter hospital stay, shorter recovery time, less scarring and quicker return to your normal routine.

How It’s Done

In laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon makes a few small incisions and inserts a thin flexible tube (laparoscope) into one of the cuts. The tube has a tiny video camera in it that is attached to a screen, so the surgeon can see inside your body. The doctor inserts long thin tools through the other incisions to make repairs.

Robotic surgery allows surgeons to use a minimally invasive approach for more complex procedures. From the control console, the surgeon guides the robot’s movement, enabling the surgeon to access vital organs through very small incisions. The robot translates the surgeon's hand, wrists and finger movements into corresponding micro-movements of robotic arm instrument tips. These specialized instruments allow for an even greater range of motion than the human hand, resulting in increased precision and control.
