Understanding Heart CT

A Premier Health Heart CT is designed to uncover early-stage heart disease, sometimes before there are symptoms. It’s fast and easy. No needles. No dyes. No exercise. You don’t even have to change your clothes. For a convenient appointment at a location near you, call (855) 887-7364 toll free or request an appointment online

Knowing is Half the Battle

During the test, images are taken with a specially equipped computed tomography or CT scanner. These images provide a cross-sectional view of your coronary arteries and measure the amount of calcium in them. Calcium deposits can indicate plaque building up in coronary arteries that can increase the future risk of heart attack and heart-related chest pain (angina). A board-certified cardiologist and radiologist assess the results and give you a calcium score. A higher than expected calcium score for your age and gender has been associated with a higher chance of a future heart attack, stroke, and death from heart disease and stroke.

Your calcium score will be sent to your primary health care provider. Depending on your calcium score, medication or lifestyle changes may be prescribed. Results may also open the door to additional testing for diagnosing and managing advanced heart disease.

How Is This Test Performed?

You will lie flat on your back on the CT examination table. A technologist will attach to your chest electrodes to monitor electrical activity of your heart with an electrocardiography (ECG) machine. This enables CT images to be taken between your heart’s contractions.

Lying on the table, you will move through the CT machine as it performs the scans. You’ll be asked to hold your breath for 10 to 20 seconds while images are being recorded. The time you are on the CT examination table is usually less than 10 minutes.

Who Should Get a Premier Health Heart CT?

Adults who have one or more of the following risk factors may want to consider a Heart CT:

A Premier Health Heart CT is not indicated for patients with low heart disease risk (under forty with no known risk factors) or those who have already been diagnosed with heart disease. Patients with symptoms, like chest pain, should consult with their health care provider.

Risks vs Benefits

CT scans result in more radiation exposure than regular X-rays, but the risk from a single scan is small. However, if there is a possibility you could be or become pregnant, inform your physician. Due to potential risk to the baby, CT scanning is not recommended for pregnant women, unless medically necessary.
