Redefining What’s Possible in Brain Tumor Care

By Jason Merritt, system vice president, Neurosciences Institute

At Premier Health’s Neurosciences Institute, patients with complex brain tumors have access to nationally recognized expertise and advanced surgical innovation. The brain tumor program is led by Andrew E. Sloan, MD, a renowned neurosurgical oncologist and director of the Brain Tumor Program at Premier Health and Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine.

Dr. Sloan is internationally known for helping develop laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT), a minimally invasive approach that has expanded treatment options for patients with glioblastoma (GBM) and other challenging brain tumors. As the most aggressive primary malignant brain tumor in adults, GBM often requires highly specialized care and advanced treatment strategies.

“Dr. Sloan’s expertise places Premier Health among a select group of academic health systems offering some of the most advanced brain tumor therapies available today,” said Jason Merritt, system vice president, Neurosciences Institute. “This level of expertise allows us to deliver highly specialized care close to home while continuing to advance research and innovation.”

Using a laser fiber less than 2 mm in diameter and real‑time MRI guidance, LITT enables precise tumor ablation while minimizing disruption to surrounding critical brain structures. This precision allows Premier Health to treat tumors often considered too high‑risk for traditional open surgery, resulting in shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, and earlier initiation of adjuvant therapies.

Under Dr. Sloan’s leadership, the brain tumor program is supported by a fully integrated, multidisciplinary team spanning neurosurgery, neuro‑oncology, radiation oncology, advanced imaging, pathology, and clinical trials, bringing academic‑level expertise and coordinated care to patients across the region.
