Orthopedic Institute Research Supports Better Patient Care

By Dave Buchanan, director of operations orthopedic and spine institute

The Premier Health Orthopedic Institute continues to advance patient care through a strong commitment to research and scholarly activity. During the 2024-2025 academic year, physicians, fellows, residents, and research collaborators contributed more than 20 peer-reviewed publications and national presentations across multiple orthopedic specialties.

Research efforts focused on topics that directly impact patient care. James Lyons, MD, Fatih Berkay, MD, and Anmol Minhas, MD, published national studies examining sports-related tendon ruptures and other acute tendon injuries treated in emergency departments throughout the United States. Their work provides valuable insight into injury patterns and treatment trends.

Several studies addressed the needs of older adults. James Lyons, MD, Christopher Cush, MD, and Hannah Jaworski, MD, investigated spine fractures and lower trunk fractures among adults age 85 and older. The findings help physicians better understand injury risks and treatment considerations for this growing population.

Other researchers examined factors that influence recovery after surgery. Fatih Berkay, MD, and colleagues found that socioeconomic challenges can affect postoperative follow-up among patients with tibial shaft fractures. Additional research explored how chronic sleep disorders may impact outcomes following total knee arthroplasty.

Innovation in patient care remained a key focus. George Via, MD, published research on automating patient-reported outcome measures following hand surgery. Patrick Lele, MD, Michael Prayson, MD, and colleagues studied regional nerve blocks that may reduce opioid use following hip fracture treatment.

Orthopedic faculty also contributed important review articles that help guide clinical practice. Rocco Ponce, MD, Samuel Wrenn, MD, and colleagues published systematic reviews on complex shoulder arthroplasty procedures. Patrick Lele, MD, James Lyons, MD, and Andrew Froehle, PhD, authored a review on quadriceps tendon ruptures that summarizes current evidence and treatment recommendations.

In addition to publishing their findings, Orthopedic Institute researchers presented their work at national meetings. One presentation examined upper-extremity injuries associated with combat sports using a national injury database.

These accomplishments reflect the Orthopedic Institute's commitment to education, innovation, and evidence-based care. Through research and collaboration, Premier Health physicians continue to advance orthopedic medicine while improving outcomes for the patients and communities they serve.
