Expanding Women's Health Services
By Melissa Merritt, system vice president of operations, women's services, Premier Health
Women’s Health programs are experiencing increased obstetrics unit closures both nationally and regionally, driven by declining birth rates, rising acuity, physician shortages, and financial pressures. Recent consolidations in our north and central markets have pushed deliveries at Miami Valley Hospital to record levels. The Cincinnati market experienced similar consolidations with the closure of two labor and delivery units in 2024. In response, we developed a data-driven growth strategy focused on the south market with capacity, leading to an expansion of midwifery services in partnership with Hilltop Obstetrics at Atrium Medical Center.
The Center for Women’s Health and Wellness has expanded its midwifery team from three to five providers, positioning it to meet demand following the closure of maternity units at Mercy Fairfield and Mercy West in Cincinnati. With a new office in Liberty Township, the Center offers patients a convenient option for personalized, holistic care and a home-like birth experience at Atrium’s Natural Beginnings Birth Center. The office maximizes consumer convenience through the onsite Hilltop physician and Perinatal Partners’ sonographer. Through these partnerships, patients have access to comprehensive care within days rather than weeks.
With the expanded team in place, full adoption of online scheduling, and strategic digital outreach, new visits have increased by 110% since 2023. Women, our most engaged digital audience, consistently prioritize convenience and accessibility when selecting a provider. Our exceptional team of certified nurse midwives is meeting demand and driving growth into our system.
