Expanding Access to Advanced Surgical Care
By Kelli Ashbeck, system director-strategy, business development chief clinical officer
Premier Health’s Surgery Institute continues to expand access to advanced surgical care across Southwest Ohio through innovative technology, specialized programs and strong multidisciplinary collaboration. These efforts reflect Premier Health’s mission to care for patients, teach the next generation of clinicians, innovate for the future and serve the community.
The Surgery Institute is enhancing patient care across a wide range of specialties by integrating leading-edge technology with coordinated expertise:
- Advanced Endoscopic Imaging: Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) enables highly accurate imaging of the gastrointestinal tract and surrounding organs from within the body. This advanced capability supports earlier detection of small, early-stage tumors and lesions and is part of a broader digestive health strategy in partnership with the Internal Medicine and Subspecialties Institute.
- Inspire® Therapy for Sleep Apnea: For patients who are unable to tolerate a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine, Inspire® therapy offers an innovative alternative. This implantable device, placed by ENT specialists, works during sleep to help keep the airway open, improving sleep quality and overall health outcomes.
- Comprehensive Reflux and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) Care: The Heartburn and Reflux Institute delivers a coordinated approach to diagnosing and treating chronic GERD and acid reflux disease. Patients benefit from advanced diagnostics and minimally invasive procedures, including robotic hiatal hernia repair and the LINX® Reflux Management System, supported by close collaboration between general surgery and gastroenterology specialists.
- Chest Wall Injury Program: Led by the Premier Acute Care Surgery team, this program provides specialized care for patients with rib fractures and complex chest injuries. The focused approach helps reduce complications, improve recovery and deliver relief for patients with challenging conditions.
- Next-Generation Robotic Surgery: The adoption of the da Vinci® 5 robotic surgical system enhances precision, visualization and efficiency across multiple specialties. For patients, robotic-assisted procedures often mean smaller incisions, less pain, shorter hospital stays and faster recovery.
Through continued investment in advanced technology, specialized programs and collaborative care models, Premier Health’s Surgery Institute is improving surgical outcomes and expanding access to high-quality care throughout the Dayton region.
