LABORATORY TESTING UPDATE – FETAL FIBRONECTIN TESTING (EPIC LAB 196)

Effective 12/08/2025, Fetal Fibronectin testing (EPIC LAB 196) for Upper Valley Medical Center and Atrium Medical Center will be performed at Miami Valley Hospital Laboratory. Since the closure of Obstetrics at Upper Valley Medical Center there has been zero testing performed at this laboratory location.  In addition, Atrium Medical Center has had very low-test volumes performed this past year.  By centralizing Fetal Fibronectin testing to the Miami Valley Hospital Laboratory, we can create cost savings across the health system. Utilizing CompuNet’s Stat Couriers, testing will be completed within 2-3 hours after the specimen has been picked up from the ordering hospital location.

Any questions, please ask Catherine Hoesl MT(ASCP), System Technical Director Hematology and Coagulation at cchoesl@compunetlab.com.

Epic Closed-Loop Critical Value Notification – Successful Go-Live!

For decades, laboratories have communicated critical results to clinicians by phone, often causing delays in patient care due to missed calls or repeated attempts.

To improve response times and workflow efficiency, Premier Health implemented Epic’s closed-loop critical result communication with the November 8 Epic upgrade. This system sends direct notifications to caregivers—nurses in inpatient areas and both nurses and providers in the ED—via push notifications and In Basket messages. Caregivers can acknowledge results from mobile devices or directly within the patient chart, effectively “closing the loop.”

Any result not acknowledged electronically is still communicated via traditional phone calls to ensure patient safety.

The rollout has been highly successful: as of December 10, 62% of eligible critical values were acknowledged electronically. This represents a significant time-saving for caregivers at the bedside and in the laboratory, ensuring faster, safer patient care.
