Premier Health Launches Region's Newest Robotic Surgery Technology at Miami Valley Hospital

DAYTON, Ohio (March 18, 2026) – Premier Health has expanded its robotic surgery capabilities across the system with the launch of the da Vinci 5® surgical system at Miami Valley Hospital, making Premier Health the first in the Dayton region to offer this technology.

“Introducing the da Vinci 5 at Miami Valley Hospital underscores Premier Health’s commitment to innovation that benefits patients and providers,” said Amy Stockman, vice president of the Surgical Institute at Premier Health. “It means patients can access the newest robotic surgery platform available in our region, and our surgeons gain tools designed for precision, comfort, and continuous learning.”

With the da Vinci 5 in place at Miami Valley Hospital, Premier Health relocated a da Vinci Xi to Miami Valley Hospital South, bringing robotic surgery to that campus for the first time.

“Moving a system to Miami Valley Hospital South further expands access, so many patients can receive care near family and support networks when that approach is right for them,” said Stockman.

For patients, when a robotic approach is appropriate, surgery may be performed through smaller incisions with highly controlled instrument movements, which can be associated with less pain and a quicker recovery time for some people.

The da Vinci 5 integrates digital tools that support surgical precision, training, and analytics. As an academic medical center, Miami Valley Hospital will leverage the platform’s dual-console capability so attending surgeons can train residents side-by-side during robotic cases.

“This platform lets us teach while we treat,” said Michael Guy, MD, gynecological oncologist at Premier Health. “We review cases, mentor in real time, and use structured practice to keep improving. That means patients benefit from a team that is learning from every case and training the next generation of surgeons right here in our community.”

The da Vinci 5 introduces more than 150 design enhancements, including 3D imaging, advanced tremor and vibration controls for smoother movements, and Force Feedback technology that allows surgeons to feel, through their controls, the pressure applied to tissue. With this knowledge, surgeons can adjust the use of their surgical instruments during surgery to reduce trauma to tissue.

At Miami Valley Hospital, the da Vinci 5 will support procedures in areas such as gynecologic oncology, general surgery, foregut surgery, gynecology, thoracic surgery, and urology.

At Miami Valley Hospital South, the da Vinci Xi will support hernia repair, general surgery, gynecologic oncology, and urology.
