What is an advanced primary stroke center?

Advanced primary stroke centers are those facilities that have met standards that support better outcomes for stroke care, according to the American Heart AssociationOff Site Icon. According to the ASA, these standards include:

  • A dedicated stroke-focused program
  • Individualized care to meet stroke patients’ needs
  • Patient involvement in their hospital care
  • Staffing by qualified medical professionals trained in stroke care

The stroke program must conform to clinical practice guidelines or evidence-based practice and meet certain performance measures in order to have advanced certification, according to The Joint CommissionOff Site Icon.
