Stroke

Premier Health providers answer frequently asked questions about stroke.

What causes strokes?

Strokes can be caused by different factors. Cardiac abnormalities can predispose the heart to develop clots that could travel to the brain. These abnormalities can be an abnormal rhythm of the heart like atrial fibrillation or other structural abnormalities. Damaged blood vessels in the head and the neck and plaque formation caused by atherosclerosis can also cause strokes. Less commonly, genetic conditions that cause abnormal formation of blood vessels or a clotting disorder can lead to stroke.
