Answers to Common Neuromuscular Health Questions

Premier Health providers answer frequently asked questions about neuromuscular health.

Is MS genetic?

Yes and no. It is not a simple, directly inherited genetic disease such as one would term autosomal dominant or autosomal recessive. Those conditions occur when just one gene mutation is passed from parent to child. MS is much more complex than this. But the genetic makeup of the immune system is passed from parent to child, and there are families in which the immune system seems to be primed to overreact. In these families there are often many members with immune-mediated conditions such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren's disease and MS.
