Essential Tremor

Premier Health providers answer frequently asked questions about essential tremor.

Can you tell the difference between an essential tremor and a muscle spasm?

We recommend that if someone develops a tremor to seek medical advice to rule out other causes of tremor such as thyroid abnormalities. We also want to rule out electrolyte abnormalities and to make sure that other medications a person is on are not causing the tremor. In addition we want to rule out Parkinson's disease, as well as Dystonia.

Essential tremor is very different than a muscle spasm. With muscle spasm, you should have pain and muscle tightness or contraction. With a tremor, you shouldn't have any pain; it should be a rhythmic oscillatory movement.
