Dr. Krebs, already witnessing major changes and improvements in the field of electrophysiology over the last decade, predicts that innovation will continue as new technologies are introduced. Upon the conclusion of the 2014 Heart Rhythm SocietyOff Site Icon (HRS) annual convention, it seems many new technologies are driven by the goal of increasing patient safety.

However, according to a 2013 article in EP Lab DigestOff Site Icon, the future of electrophysiology may involve technologies, procedures and protocols that focus on areas outside the heart. Research is currently being conducted on body mapping and using electrophysiology methods for gene delivery—all in an effort to treat and cure irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias).
