A clipless pedal facilitates a pulling-up of the pedal as well as pushing down. Studies have suggested that the resulting “upstroke” may improve pedaling performance, according to the NIH.

Having a clipless pedal may prevent some injuries of slipping off the pedal and then falling off the bike, says Brian Jans. Having a clipless pedal may also help with performance in terms of being more efficient in pedaling stroke.

The American Academy of Family PhysiciansOff Site Icon (AAFP) states that it’s important to ensure that a bicycle is in proper working condition before riding. Before riding, intermittently thereafter, one should have the bicycle and parts checked by a professional to confirm its safety.
