How or why does a person develop irritable bowel syndrome?

It is not completely understood how or why a person develops irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). 

Some possible factors that could lead to IBS, according to the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders(IFFGD), include genetics or someone’s medical history, including certain infections or trauma.
