Who is at risk for developing cataracts?

Many people get cataracts as they get older. More than half of all Americans will have had either a cataract surgery or a cataract by age 80, according to the National Institutes of HealthOff Site Icon (NIH).

Though cataracts are seen more often in older people, they can happen at any age, according to Premier Health Specialists physicians. Being exposed to high doses of radiation or steroids can increase a risk of cataracts.

In addition to aging, risk factors for cataract, according to the NIH, include:

  • behavioral choices, such as alcohol use and smoking
  • environmental factors, including too much time in the sun
  • some diseases, including diabetes

People with diabetes are 60 percent more likely than others to get cataracts. Having diabetes can cause them to develop faster and at a younger age, according to the American Diabetes AssociationOff Site Icon (ADA).
