What are the different types of intraocular lenses that can be chosen for cataract surgery?

There are a variety of intraocular lens options that you can choose when having cataract surgery, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO).

Those lens options include:

  • Accommodative or multifocal – These lenses might be a good choice if you want to see both near and far without needing glasses, and also if you frequently drive at night. But, you might also find it difficult to adjust to multifocal lenses.
  • Monofocal – The most traditional option in intraocular lenses, these provide the best-possible corrected vision at your choice of distance – close or far. Most people who choose these have their lenses set for distance and use reading glasses as needed.
  • Toric lenses – This type of lens has extra built-in correction to help your sight if you have astigmatism.
