Joint injections can be a useful diagnostic and therapeutic tool in managing joint pain, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). There are few side effects, but some can include tendon rupture or infection, according to the AAFP. Given the possibility of side effects, frequent joint injections to the same site are sometimes discouraged, according to the American College of Rheumatology (ACR)
. Complications may include whitening of the skin at the injection site and thinning of the skin, according to the ACR.
