What are signs and symptoms of osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis has actually been deemed a silent disease since there are not a lot of prodromal symptoms or things that make you think, “Gosh my hip is starting to hurt a little bit; maybe my bone density isn't where it should be.”

Most of the time you find this out after something has already happened; after you've had that fall and broken your wrist or broken your hip.  A lot of times from an orthopedic standpoint, it's our job to ensure that it doesn't happen again. Once you do have a fragility fracture, you're at a 10-fold increase of having another fracture.  That's the biggest prediction of a fragility fracture, so it's important once you do to have some self-awareness, and to discuss with your orthopedic surgeon and your family doctor to determine how you can keep this from happening again.
