Answers to Common Chronic Neck Pain Questions

Premier Health providers answer frequently asked questions about chronic neck pain.

What are common symptoms of neck pain?

Common symptoms of neck pain include pain, generalized discomfort and stiffness. However, pain that moves from your neck to your arm, creating a tingling (“pins and needles”) sensation – or numbness or weakness – can signal a more serious condition. That is, radiculopathy – a herniated or ruptured disc. If these sensations don’t subside in a week or two with modified positioning of your neck, you should consider seeing your doctor. When a spinal disc ruptures, the soft gel-like center pushes through a crack in the exterior casing and can irritate nearby nerve roots, causing pain, numbness or weakness in the arm.
