Answers to Common Chronic Neck Pain Questions

Premier Health providers answer frequently asked questions about chronic neck pain.

What are common causes of neck pain?

Common causes of neck pain include:

  • Traumatic injury – not necessarily serious trauma, but often from more common incidents such as whiplash from a rear-end vehicle collision.
  • Lifestyle issues that lead to muscle fatigue or wear and tear of vertebrae. Smartphone use has become a common contributor, as smartphone users spend a lot of time with their necks flexed down to text and browse. This is commonly referred to as “tech neck.”
  • Age-related wear and tear of the spine, such as arthritis.
  • Occupational stresses such as viewing a computer screen for long periods of time in a hunched position.
  • Other causes like lifting weights with improper form, or uncomfortable sleep positions and pillows that provide insufficient support.
