Premier Health Nursing Research: 2018 in Review

This past year was an amazing year for nursing research, evidence-based practice (EBP), and performance improvement (PI). Nurses across Premier Health have studied, tested, and translated evidence for best practices in nursing.

The year began with a Research, EBP, and PI Poster Walk as part of Nurse Recognition in May at all Premier Health sites. Check out the 2018 Poster Walk on the New Knowledge, Information and Innovation Council site on SharePoint to find outstanding completed nursing research, EBP, and PI projects.

Areas of focus for research, publications, presentations, and posters in 2018 included:

  • Education – Advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) orientation; reducing readmissions through self-care education in heart failure; professional and organizational outcomes for hospital nurse residency programs
  • Practice – Patient outcomes for early activity progression; safe nurse handoffs; reducing noise in the ICU; impact of advanced practice in reducing inpatient falls; patient outcomes with exercise in cancer; early stroke assessment in the community; surfactant therapy in very low birth weight infants; the opioid crisis; responding to the rise in suicidality in older adults
  • Nursing – Attitudes, knowledge, and practices regarding evidence-based practice; outcomes for nursing recognition programs; validation of an instrument designed to measure servant leadership in a Magnet setting

Also completed in 2018 was an updated Nursing Research internet page. This site has many resources for new and experienced investigators. You can find projects, posters, publications, and resources with more additions planned for 2019.

Finally, our Nursing Research Fellows have begun their journey! The Nursing Research Fellowship is a structured program of clinical inquiry and scholarship designed to develop and sustain leaders to support research and best practice, patient outcomes, and nurse satisfaction. Please welcome the fellows who will be rounding soon to meet you and listen to your ideas for nursing research, EBP, and PI for 2019!
