NK03: Integrating Evidence-Based Findings into Practice:  Miami Valley Hospital     

Provide one example of how clinical nurses used evidence-based findings to implement a practice new to the organization.

Clinical nurses implemented a new hospital elder life program (HELP) to minimize and prevent delirium. In the first year, the pilot unit achieved a decrease in variable cost per case and length of stay for the target population. 

AND

Provide one example of how clinical nurses used evidence-based findings to revise an existing practice to improve care.

MVH/MVHS clinical nurses and advance practice nurses revised the comfort management tool to reliably assess sedated and intubated patients using the CPOT scale.

Provide two examples of an improvement that resulted from an innovation in nursing.

Interoperability of Alaris Pumps with EPIC – a “guardrail” for patient safety. This led to a 32 percent reduction in IV infusion medication error rate post-implementation. 

AND

The Maternity 1 unit council created and implemented a group mother-baby discharge class for parents to attend which provided uninterrupted, standardized group learning. Implementing this class facilitated readiness to discharge, as evidenced by a 7 percent reduction in the average LOS on Maternity 1 post-implementation!
